Discovering Transdanubia
Left on Thursday AM to visit the west and southern areas of Hungary. Stopped in Pannonhalma and had a tour of the Pannonhalma Abbey. Discovered that I had not packed my camera so I'll try to get some pics uploaded later. After lunch we moved on to Fertod and toured the Esterhazy Castle. The highlihgt of the day was the journey of trying to find the Pan European Pik-Nik area on the border of Hungary and Austria. The road being closed we took a country road running parralel to it and besically went off-roading in a luxury bus. Wehn we couldn't go any further, we got out and hiked up the hill. Couldn't find it but enjoyed the beautiful hike in the dense forest. We then boarded the bus and went back to the first road. After checking in with a guard at the nearby prison, yes the nearby prison we proceeded up the blocked off road and found the area, where the Austrians and Hungarians were to meet as a ceremonial Pik-Nik area to celebrate the upcoming event of the fall of the 'iron curtain'. At the day of this pik-nik several hundred east Germans who had been vacationing in Hungary were able to cross the border into the west.
Friday we did a walking tour of Sopron and then moved on to Balatonfured/Lake Balaton area. Beautiful torquoise blue water. Our bus was ferried across the water so that we could continue on to the Pecs.
Saturday we spent the day in Pecs, which is a 2010 cultural captial of Europe. Toured a beautiful church, a mosque that had been converted to a church and two museums. Good to be back at our hotel in Budapest especially since the bus broke down on the highway. Blessings to Gabor our bus driver, who was able to add some water to the radiator and get us up and running again.. Tomorrow, a day off, is full plans of leisure and enjloying some of the sights of Budapest.
