Week End Get Away

This weekend we headed out of Budapest to go east to Debrecen. While there we toured the University, the protestent school, chapel and library and went on to the Castle. Our supper was in the depths of the wine cellar. Amazing:0)

Saturday was a trip to one of the National Parks which should some of the livestock, horsemenship and give a feel for life in earlier days. Yes, I even rode a horse and had hungry little piglets chase after our wagon. We continued on to Egar to visit their University library which held a collection of books as well as a fantastic tromp d'oeil on the ceiling. The camera obscura was in the top floor 'darkroom'. Which using a series of mirrors could reflect views of the city. Very interesting, even if a bit close and stuffy. On our way to Holloko we had to take a detour as the country roads had been damaged by Hungarian's recent heavy rain. We arrived a bit later than expected to have an outdoor lunch and a celebratory of the Hungarian brandy, Polenka as a celebration of our countries 4th of July. We toured the small village which relies heavily on tourism to stay 'afloat'. What a lovely little community and I found myself looking with interest at some of the empty shops that hold possibilities for a business in the Hungarian countryside.

As we returned to Budapest, we had to take another detour because of the road condtions. This gave us the opportunity to drive a bit north and even see the Hungarian/Slovakian border.

All in all, this was a lovely weekend getaway with the group learning more about other communities in Hungary besides Budapest.
